The Calgary Cubs are proud to celebrate AJ Weimer on earning a roster spot with Prairie Baseball Academy, where he will continue his baseball career while pursuing Kinesiology & Biological Sciences.
AJ, a catcher and second baseman wearing #2, has built his baseball journey on resilience, competitiveness, and a deep love for the game. One of the most memorable moments of his career came when he was invited by Best in the U.S. Showcases to participate in a national MLB event in Los Angeles, California. During the event, AJ had the opportunity to play at Angel Stadium, a professional ballpark he had always dreamed of stepping onto, while competing in front of numerous college recruiters and professional scouts. Being on that field, surrounded by elite talent and seeing himself on the jumbotron, was an unforgettable experience and one of the proudest moments of his baseball journey to date.
AJ credits the biggest influence on his development to his parents, whose constant support, encouragement, and belief in him allowed him to step onto the field with confidence and without fear of failure. Knowing they were proud of him regardless of results gave him the freedom to compete fully. He also gives special recognition to his brother, Lucas, a member of the U15 AAA Webber Wildcats. Lucas has been AJ’s competitor, motivator, and biggest supporter for as long as he can remember. Whether it’s sports, academics, or even racing to use the shower in the morning, Lucas has consistently challenged AJ to be the best version of himself. From daily skill work to accountability on and off the field, Lucas has played a major role in AJ’s growth as both a player and a person.
AJ’s path to the next level was strongly shaped by his time with Baseball Calgary and the Calgary Cubs. After completing his final year of U13 baseball, AJ tried out for several teams and faced criticism on multiple fronts, being described as “too small,” “lacking ability,” and “not ready for the AAA level.” Despite those setbacks, Cubs coaches Jamie Mitchell, Brad Doss, and Duncan Sorriseau saw what others did not: a gamer, a competitor, and a teammate willing to do whatever it takes to win.
Since earning his opportunity with the Cubs U15 AAA program, AJ’s development accelerated through attention to even the smallest details of the game—allowing him to make plays he never thought possible, or that he had only seen on television. Just as impactful was the emphasis the Cubs placed on the mental side of baseball. AJ learned that baseball is a game of failure, where even the best hitters fail more than they succeed and pitchers can execute perfectly yet still give up results. Through the Cubs organization, AJ learned that failure is natural, and how a player responds to it is what separates good players from great ones. The Cubs coaches’ guidance, encouragement, and dedication played a critical role in shaping AJ into the player he is today.
When reflecting on what he will miss most, AJ points to the environment and energy of the Cubs program. Every day at the facility was filled with smiles, laughter, friendship, and a shared love for the game—reminding him that baseball is ultimately about the people you play it with.
AJ’s advice to younger players reflects the mindset that carried him to the next level:
“As great as you are, as skilled as you are, as talented as you are, never allow life to make you forget why you do what you do.”
The Calgary Cubs congratulate AJ Weimer on earning his post-secondary roster spot with Prairie Baseball Academy and are proud to be part of his journey. We look forward to watching what’s next as he continues to chase his goals at the next level.
