Who Are We?

A registered non-profit society since 1990. Our official registered name: Baseball Calgary Amateur Association 2003.
An organization of volunteers that provides competitive and performance levels of baseball to city of Calgary and area athletes, ages 12-18+.  In 2013 we added the Senior level of ball for players 19 and older who want to continue to play competitive baseball in a men's league.
A member of Baseball Alberta and Baseball Canada - The feeder system for Team Alberta's and Team Canada's men's and women's teams.

Why Choose Baseball Calgary?

Frequently asked questions:

How much are team registrations?

Baseball Calgary registration dues for the 2017 season will be $1250+ $275 deposit per player  from Pee Wee to Midget, plus an additional $200 refundable deposit for jerseys and workbee participation.  Actual per player costs are approximately $2300. Our proceeds from semi annual casino funds allow us to heavily subsidize the cost of playing ball. Some of the things the dues cover are as follows:

- Baseball Alberta insurance and team registration dues

- Coach honorariums and travel expenses

- Umpire fees

- Hat, jersey and warm up jacket (jersey to be returned at end of season)

- Diamond rentals, equipment purchases, porta potty rentals

- Outdoor Facility rental and coaching fees for February through April

- Contribute to the costs of marketing, maintaining and improving the fields, purchasing supplies, etc.

 

Are there team dues over and above registration?

Additional team fees in terms of a team cash call will be determined by the parents and coaches of the team.  These dues will cover extra clothing the teams may wish to purchase and costs for the tournaments the team elects to enter, etc.  Teams are responsible for coaches travel expenses for any non league play. The parents may elect to fundraise the additional costs or do cash-calls. Each team will elect a Team Manager and Team Treasurer to manage budget, scheduling, etc.  

Is there travel involved? If so, where and how often?

Baseball Alberta determines the schedule of where and when the teams play.  All teams in Baseball Calgary can expect to travel throughout Alberta for regular league play.  Most games are played on the weekends and teams can expect to play 3 or 4+ games per weekend.

Parents and Coaches will identify additional tournaments and exhibition game opportunities based on the needs of the athletes.  These tournaments might be locally hosted or can be in BC, Saskatchewan, Alberta or even into the US.  Tournament entry fees, travel costs - for athletes and coaches - are over and above the league and team dues.

Is there any fundraising involved?

There may be team fundraising initiatives to help offset costs. Each team will decide if and what fundraising they will take on. 

Are parents expected to volunteer?

Yes, Baseball Calgary is a volunteer driven organization.  As a non-profit organization Baseball Calgary relies on volunteer involvement for work bees to get the diamonds ready for the season, before and after games and practices and then to prepare them for winter. 

One of our major sources of funding is from working casinos.  Our next casino will be scheduled for the spring of 2017 and we will need approximately 45 individuals to volunteer to fill the schedule.

A requirement of the league is that we also host weekends of play in Calgary and parents are required for diamond preparation, scorekeeping, concession, etc.  We also host the annual Summer Slam tournament in June which requires a sub-committee for planning and hosting. These are very busy weekends and are very successful when everyone participates.

There is also the opportunity to join the Board and work together to make Baseball Calgary successful and grow the league.

We have even had many relatives of players volunteer - grandparents, aunts, uncles, and many of our Board members are volunteering their time even though they do not have children in the league any longer. 

We truly appreciate all who pitch in and help.

What's the difference between Competitive and Performance?

Baseball Alberta offers Community, Competetive and Performance levels of play.  Competitive can be compared to AA,  and Performance to AAA, and Community to recreational play.  Baseball Calgary has played in the Competitive and/or Performance levels, both of which are very exciting levels of play.

The Performance teams will be scheduled with the other Performance teams in Alberta and play against the same teams the entire season.

Competitive teams are broken down into four Divisions and will play a seeding round at the start of the season to determine which Division they will be placed in.  Part way through the season another seeding round is played and teams may be moved up or down depending on their results.  The final round is determined for Provincials.  (See the Baseball Alberta League Rules for further information.)

How long is the season? How many games do they play?

League play usually begins the first week of May and can go through to the end of July early August, depending on when Provincials are being held.  If the teams win Provincials, they may go on to Westerns and possibly Nationals.

With regular league play, exhibition games and any extra tournaments the teams register for, players can expect to play 40+ games.  Add two or three practices a week to this and you will see amazing results as the season goes on.

Monetary Policy

Players must be registered prior to first team practice (indoor or outdoor).  Registration does not take effect until registration fees are paid in full and funds have cleared. All registration fees must be paid online with a valid credit card

Once a player has been selected to a team, no refunds will be provided should the player decide to leave the team.

The only exception to our refund policy is due to injury (with a doctor’s certificate or note).  In the event of an injury refund, a $50 processing fee will be retained off the following percentages. 

Refunds for injury will be calculated as follows: 

Prior to Apr 1 - 85%

Prior to May 1- 75%

Prior to June 1 - 50%

Prior to July 1 - 25%

No refunds after July 1 of the current season for any reason.
